chalkboard_FullFHL has launched the English/Spanish as a Second Language Program.  We have classes for Hispanics to learn Basic English to be able to effectively communicate in the workplace.  In addition, we have Spanish as a Second Language (SSL) classes for the English-speaking population to learn Spanish for Hispanic community outreach.

Throughout both of these programs, we have community service components to allow the students use their language skills to use give back to the community.  Last May, our ESL students taught basic Spanish at a workshop during our ESL cookout.  Also, we are offering the same type of service to the Hispanic population in which the SSL students are teaching English.  Throughout these community service components to the classes, not only are the students able to use the language they are learning in the real world but are able to connect and exchange with people of another culture.

We have successfully completed four ESL classes so far.  Three of the classes were for past recipients of food pantry assistance and one class was at a local business.  In addition, we are currently offering an SSL class specifically equipping FHL volunteers and local community volunteers/workers with basic Spanish.

Here are some ways to partner with the FHL/SSL Program:

  1. Volunteer for one of our classes or workshops
  2. Donate funds and/or materials
  3. Host an ESL or SSL class at your organization
  4. Refer students to us who would like to learn Spanish or English
  5. Allow us to train your employees by teaching them English or Spanish

FHL International, Inc. also supports internships with local universities and colleges such as IUPUI, IU, and IVY TECH.  If you are interested in seeking an internship with FHL, please contact Merlin Gonzales at merlin@fhlinternational.org or call 317.578.3370.  What’s it like to intern with FHL?  We have a number of outreach and ministry programs that serve in connection with the city Indianapolis.  The following is a testimonial from a recent FHL Intern who worked with the FHL ESL/SSL  Program:

I liked the way that this internship was set up. I am proud of the work that I completed and the experiences that I had; really enjoyed this opportunity to participate in an organization that makes such a difference in the Hispanic community.  I really felt like I contributed and I received some very valuable life experiences in the process.  What an inspirational organization! – Kara S.  IUPUI Intern
